That's right- Colic is a SYMPTOM of something bigg That's right- Colic is a SYMPTOM of something bigger going on, it's NOT a diagnosis.
If you have been told your baby has colic- I want you to ask your health care provider "WHY?"
Signs of colic include;
😭 excessive inconsolable crying for 3 or more consecutive hours on 3 or more days of the week (in other words, not all the time as you would see with reflux)
😭 usually seen in babies from 6 weeks to 4-6 months of age
😭 arching back when crying
😭 pulling up of the knees
Colic is often 'diagnosed' to explain these symptoms, however, MOST of the time these symptoms are caused by trapped wind in your baby's tummy or bowel.
We want to know WHY this is happening- if you are bottle OR breast feeding HOW is your baby feeding at the bottle/ breast? Have you had them assessed by a professional in that field- often a Lactation Consultant, not a GP or pediatrician.
Things to look out for that increase colic symptoms are
❎A shallow latch
❎Drinking too fast
❎An overactive/ fast letdown reflex
❎A foremilk imbalance
❎Oral Ties- tongue, lip, or cheek ties
❎An inability to use mouth mechanics to co-ordinate a suck/ swallow rhythm
❎An imbalanced gut biome
❎Tightness in the face, neck, or spine.
Often we can help the colicky episodes by ✅improving the latch with help from a Lactation Consultant
✅getting body work done by an infant specialist
✅completing a round of probiotics
✅assessing for oral ties
✅Changing to a paced feed with bottles
✅increasing tummy-time
If your Health Care Provider cannot answer your "WHY?", find someone who can 🙏🏼

Have you been told, or suspect, that your baby has Have you been told, or suspect, that your baby has a tongue, lip, or cheek tie?
I've recently completed a specialized course to assist families in the support and treatment of infant oral ties.
This course has enabled me to ensure my clients are getting the best advice, assessment, and holistic treatment by a multi-disciplinary health care team, to ensure the best outcomes for their babies.
I'll admit there are a few clients I have seen that I may have fallen short of being able to support and guide in the right direction- but it's because of you that I invested in the most up-to-date evidence-based education.
If you suspect or have been told your baby has an oral tie, I implore you to reach out to a specialized International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Having surgery for a tongue tie is not dependent on how it LOOKS but on how it FUNCTIONS.

A Lactation Consultant will be able to complete a full assessment of your baby's mouth, feeding ability (whether breast or bottle-fed), milk supply, and baby behavior.
They will be able to assist you in choosing the correct health care practitioner/s for the treatment of your baby's ties if required.
They will have a plan in place for you before, during, and after any required surgery, and ensure your breast milk supply is protected if breastfeeding is too painful.
Keep a look out for more posts on oral ties and how an IBCLC is an integral part of the process

A question I'm asked by a lot of my clients. Slee A question I'm asked by a lot of my clients. Sleep can seem so overwhelming and not nearly enough while you're in that newborn bubble.
Here are a few facts that may help you get through those first few weeks...
😴 Your newborn's sleep needs are around the clock- not divided into day and night.
😴 Sleep will fall between all other needs such as Nutrition, nappy changes, burping, and nurturing/ bonding time with parents
😴 A newborn requires anywhere from 10 hours to 18 hours of sleep in a 24-hour window
😴 A newborns sleep cycle can last anywhere between 20 minutes and a few hours
😴 It is normal for your newborn to appear 'restless' during sleep- this is their active sleep phase, they may open their eyes, wriggle, cry out sporadically and suck on a hand, tongue, or lips.
😴 Your newborn does not develop its Circadian Rhythm until 6-8 weeks of age. This means they have no idea nighttime is for sleeping and are completely dependent on hormone transfer from mum to bub to give signals it's sleep time, or cuddles and settling if bottle-fed.
😴 It's SO ok for your newborn to only want to sleep on you for most naps- this is developmentally needed and helps them adjust to the outside world, feel safe, maintain temperature, and bond with you.
😴 Feed to sleep is also neurologically beneficial and can be necessary for your newborn.
If you're struggling with sleepy cues, want some tips on settling your baby, and would like to ensure you are establishing healthy sleep habits, book in for an 'Unpacking the Fourth-Trimester' session.

Wondering how you'll have enough milk to nourish y Wondering how you'll have enough milk to nourish your baby?
I find it incredible and so reassuring when you realize just how small your baby's stomach is at birth and in those early days.
💧Remember your baby's tummies are teeny tiny to start with and a few drops to 5 ml per feed is all your baby needs.
💧Those few drops of colostrum you work so hard to extract are much easier for your baby to get from the breast due to the ability to engage all of those loved-up hormones that assist in expelling and making the milk
💧Colostrum, the first milk, is really high in calories for minimal work so not much is needed.
💧Your babies tummy slowly expands as the volume of milk increases, which is why your baby will frequently feed at the breast.
💧Your body will know when to increase the supply and/or makeup of the milk by your baby's changes in feeding patterns and saliva. Remember supply and demand?
💧Have faith and remember- Just as the placenta knows how to grow and nourish your baby, so does your breast milk!
If you're worried about your supply, reach out to a Lactation Consultant and get some reassurance or tips for managing your supply, always look at the 24-hour picture and beyond.

What is cluster feeding? Cluster feeding is when y What is cluster feeding?
Cluster feeding is when your baby feeds very frequently with sometimes no break between feeds for 2-4 hours at a time.
This generally happens once in a 24-hour period especially for breastfeeding babies, but sometimes for bottle-fed babies as well.
Why does cluster feeding happen?
Cluster feeding happens especially in the evening or at night when Prolactin (the hormone that helps to make the milk) is low. When the prolactin is low you'll have less milk stored in the breasts and milk is generally made as your baby sucks at the breasts.
Cluster feeding also helps to slowly expand your baby's tummy to be able to take more milk as they grow.
Cluster feeding helps to transfer all the sleepy hormones to eventually help your baby settle and sleep.
Cluster feeding also helps ensure a good supply of breastmilk for the next 24-48 hours- remember supply on demand?
Cluster feeding also assists in bonding, temperature, and blood sugar regulation and provides much-needed comfort for your baby.
Cluster feeding is also how your baby tells your body it's time to change the makeup of the milk or increase supply as your baby grows.
If you are exclusively breastfeeding - go with your baby's cues, you can't overfeed and a lot of this feeding time is not just about calorie intake. Your baby will settle eventually.
If you are bottle-feeding be sure to be feeding on hunger cues as you don't want to overfeed and end up with a baby with over extended tummy pains.
If you are not quite sure what your baby is wanting, strip them down to a nappy and enjoy some skin-to-skin time- this is the easiest way to settle a fractious baby.
If you are wanting some guidance and tips on reading your baby's cues book in for a Baby Whisperer Session and build on your confidence and skills in meeting your baby's needs.

I know as an IBC Lactation Consultant it's my job I know as an IBC Lactation Consultant it's my job to promote exclusive breastfeeding, but being a mum of three, a midwife, and passionate about the need for more education and awareness for transitioning to parenthood I know breastfeeding is not always the answer for all families.
I'm all for breastfeeding, formula feeding, mixed feeding, or pumping and bottle feeding - I just think everyone deserves access to appropriate evidence-based education on whatever feed method they choose so they can make an informed decision.
If you're pregnant and not sure what your choice of feeding method is, or you want more information on what breastfeeding involves, and what your options are if you don't necessarily want to breastfeed; book a Planning to Breastfeed Session, to get all the information to make an informed decision on your feeding options.

I've seen several women lately that have been told I've seen several women lately that have been told it's ok for breastfeeding to be painful and that they need to "toughen up the nipples and get used to it".
Yes, your nipples will probably become tender, but a splash of breast milk and nipple cream should be enough to bring about some relief.
Breastfeeding should NOT hurt, it should NOT be painful, it should NOT make your toes curl and try to claw the ceiling to get away from your baby and it should NOT make you dread when your baby wakes for their next feed.
Pain is a signal to your brain to tell you your baby is not latched correctly. We mustn't ignore a pain signal or feel we can just push through as this is just causing more damage.
If your nipple is misshapen- looking like a tent, a skate ramp, or the tip of a li[stick your baby is not latched correctly. If your nipples are grazed, blistered, or bleeding your baby is not latched correctly. Please check out '10 Steps to a good latch' a free resource on my website under helpful articles to help improve your latch.
If you cannot get a deeper latch that feels pain-free immediately or at most after 7-10 seconds, please seek out some help and guidance from a midwife or a Lactation Consultant. It's often the smallest tweak that will create a world of difference in how your baby feels at the breast.

Bringing a new baby home to an older child can bri Bringing a new baby home to an older child can bring about so many emotions for you and your child.
It's normal to feel excited, nervous, and terrified all at once. It's normal for your older child to test the boundaries, want to smother their younger sibling with affection, demand attention from their parents, and have moments of resenting this new addition to their family- they are simply finding out where they fit into this new dynamic.
My suggestions when these concerns are raised in-home consultations, or at the hospital are;
🌟Try to include them with age-appropriate tasks when attending to your baby
🌟Explain that when the baby cries, they are just trying to 'talk' to them to say something needs fixing
🌟 Have a snack ready on an accessible table, or if old enough in the fridge and a drink bottle on hand that they can help themselves to when you are needing to feed the baby
🌟Have some selected toys they can play with or a show that they can look forward to watching when it is time to feed the baby. I found building blocks great as you can eventually help one-handed and you can verbalize ideas for them to build- what child doesn't love to knock over a tower they have just built!?
🌟Try to minimize the negative words such as 'no' and 'not now' when tending to the baby, try "we can do that once mummy has finished this feed, how about we read a book at the moment".
🌟 Pick your battles- I'm a big one for "if it isn't a safety concern" and it isn't going to cause a big change, is it worth arguing over? If they want to pull all the dress ups out while you're attending to your baby, let them- get them to help clean it up once you are free, and take advantage of the situation to help them learn about consequences 😅
What did you find useful when you took your baby home to an older child?

A breastfeed is so much more than just meeting nut A breastfeed is so much more than just meeting nutritional requirements for your baby.
Breastfeeding, especially if we are skin to skin helps to
🤱reduce cortisol levels, a stress hormone, in your baby and mum
🤱Enables hormone transfer from mum to babe to assist in settling after a feed has finished
🤱Transfers antibodies to help protect your baby from illness
🤱Increases Oxytocin in both mum and babe which not only assists to drive milk production but leads to synchronicity and responsiveness in a mother's reaction to her baby
🤱It offers security and calmness for your baby as they transition to being earthside - especially during the Witching hours.
🤱It is 'home' for your baby, and exactly where they want to be...
If you are bottle feeding you can still assist your baby with many of these things listed. By regularly doing some prolonged skin-to-skin at any time of the day, but especially when your baby is unsettled.

I've seen so many women feel so disheartened when I've seen so many women feel so disheartened when breastfeeding "doesn't come naturally" for them. Your baby has an instinct to suck, but I wholeheartedly believe breastfeeding is no longer instinctive for many mothers and it's a skill we LEARN.

Some people learn new skills really quickly and find it feels more comfortable and natural. But a lot of us have to put a lot of work in, it feels a bit awkward and not very natural. Then we go and throw a baby in the mix and it's a lot like, I imagine, learning to dance would be like! Just like learning to dance, it helps to have a partner who has a vague idea of what's going on too.
Just because it's not coming naturally, doesn't mean you can't do it or you've failed.
If you feel totally out of your comfort zone, it just means you need a bit of guidance to break down the steps so it makes sense for you, someone who can make suggestions to help your baby feel comfortable and understand the steps too.
If you decide breastfeeding is not for you- that's ok, but if you feel like it's not working and it just should- cut yourself a break and know it takes time to learn and for things to come together. It also takes a lot of support and sometimes a trained professional to help you LEARN the steps to get it right.
If you haven't started your journey yet- Book yourself in for a 'Planning to breastfeed' session, or find a Lactation Consultant that can take you through what is normal, what to expect, learn the basics of breastfeeding, what you can do if things are not going as expected and importantly who your supports are that you can call upon to help you through LEARNING to breastfeed.

Wait, What??? That's right- when our breasts are q Wait, What???
That's right- when our breasts are quite firm lumpy and hard, the milk in those little alveolar sacks releases a protein called FIL (Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation). This protein's job is to tell the brain there's too much milk and will slow or stop milk production in that cell.
This is why it's important to empty one breast at each feed, not skip a feed and feed to your baby's demands, not to the clock.
Please don't go and express now if you're feeling full and lumpy, this will only drive the supply-on-demand cycle and you'll simply be making more milk- increasing breast fullness and FIL.
If you're having trouble with oversupply and breast fullness, contact a Lactation Consultant for advice on how to best deal with this.
Do you have any questions or facts you want to clarify? Send me a DM and I'll post a new fact each Sunday.

What's normal weight gain for a breastfed baby?? D What's normal weight gain for a breastfed baby?? Did you have trouble with your milk supply?

A loss of up to 10% of birth weight at 48 hours is expected and within normal ranges.
By day 5 we would expect some weight gain and by 2-3 weeks we like to see babies back or above their birth weight.
On AVERAGE we like to see a gain of 150-200g per week from birth to 3 months. That's 20- 35g per day. (RCH, child growth in early years)

💫This weight gain is not linear, which means some days we could see a gain of 10g, and other days we could see a gain of 50g.
💫If your baby is slow to gain in the early weeks it is important to take on board what your health professional is concerned about. But you can keep breastfeeding if that is your preference. Please consult with a Lactation Consultant early and find out what may be slowing your baby's growth.
💫Contributing factors include; substituting feeds with formula or expressed breastmilk and NOT stimulating the breasts, use of dummies, nipple shields, or most commonly a shallow latch that is not stimulating the demand-supply hormone drive, or not emptying the breast adequately.
💫These factors are all fixable- very few women are unable to produce enough milk for their baby. It may be as easy as changing the latch, increasing breast stimulation, or removing the dummy for a short period to see an increase in breast milk, and then an increase in weight gain.

All these factors are easily fixed with a bit of education, discussion, and getting a deep latch at the breast, if you have concerns or questions- Book a phone consult or in-home Lactation Consult so we can have a chat to gain some confidence and reassurance.
Here's a fun fact about breastfeeding; Did you kno Here's a fun fact about breastfeeding;
Did you know that breastfeeding works by a 'demand' and 'supply'? However, there is a delay to the supply of around 24-48 hours. So what your baby demands at the breast will take 1-2 days to arrive. This is why it takes 2-3 days (according to the textbook 👩‍🎓) for most women's transitional milk to come in.
If we continue to feed on demand and exclusively breastfeed a mother's supply should be just right for their baby 🤱
If you have concerns about your supply, ask your midwife for advice in the hospital or book a consult with a lactation consultant - it's more often latch-related than mum's ability to make enough milk!
⬆️This is a question I ask all of my breastfee ⬆️This is a question I ask all of my breastfeeding clients and the women I care for on the ward @the_bays_healthcare .
It's an important question to have a think about... In clinic for @drandrewgriffiths I often I ask If a woman is "planning to breastfeed" and the answer is so often "yeah, I think I'll give it a go?"
Why? and if you'll give it a go what's the main goal or most important factor for you and your family?
Are you hoping to get as much colostrum in as you can?
To exclusively breastfeed for so many months?
To breastfeed while it works for the family then wean?
To express and bottle feed while you can?
There's never a right or wrong answer to this question and every woman will have different reasons to feed their baby the way they choose- which I fully support 💯!
An answer I ask you to consider and have a think about is;
"To get as much breast milk into my baby as I physically and Mentally can manage". This can take the pressure off thinking we need to exclusively breastfeed in order to breastfeed successfully and to encourage you to take ONE feed at a time.
If you'd like to set yourself up for a successful breastfeeding journey- however that looks for you, you're just after some more information about breastfeeding in the early days and what's normal, or you've had a challenging past experience - book a 'Planning to Breastfeed Session' it's only $50 for a whole lot of information, quick check sheets and importantly some reassurance.

🌸Let's talk breast pumps... Head to my website 🌸Let's talk breast pumps... Head to my website for the full Helpful Article. What pump do you find useful?
The first thing we need to know when choosing a breast pump is “why do we need one?”
If you are still pregnant and it's another thing to tick off your list of things to buy, may I suggest you hold off until we know the “why”?
There are a variety of different pumps ranging from $40 through to Hospital-grade pumps valued at thousands of dollars.
🌸Hospital Grade Electric Pumps- Gold standard to establish a milk supply in the absence of stimulation by your baby, or a minimal or no milk supply. These are expensive and are best to hire.
🌸Personal Use Pumps: Great for using for an established supply, they assist to increase breast stimulation for a low supply or if infant weight loss is a concern, or if you simply want to have a store of breast milk in the freezer. They are affordable and effective for stimulating and collecting milk. The Spectra S2 or S1 is a great choice and is now available to rent or buy through The Postnatal Midwife website.
🌸Battery Operated/ Small Semi-Electric Pumps: Not as effective as they tend to have a lower suction and cycle per minute. affordable but best used when plugged in.
🌸Manually Operated Pumps- affordable, can be effective in collecting milk depending on the user as to adequate cycles per minute and suction.
🌸Letdown Pump or cup- fantastic to collect a letdown while feeding or even handsfree to pop in your bra to collect any milk that would otherwise be absorbed by your breast pads. These cups and pumps still stimulate milk production so be cautious if oversupply is a concern. Haakaa products available soon on the website.
🌸Unless you know you’re wanting to regularly express breast milk I do suggest you hold off on purchasing anything too expensive, maybe look at starting with a silicon letdown cup and see how you go.

If your baby is arching back maybe demanding a fee If your baby is arching back maybe demanding a feed but then pushing you or the bottle away, has a high pitched squeak or cry then they have got a pocket of wind that needs shifting.
Helping your baby with wind pain can be done in many different ways. From different upright positions to a tummy massage to help expel wind.
But if we can reduce the intake of wind during a feed it hopefully avoids a distressed windy baby.
💨 Stop a breastfeed or a bottle feed at regular intervals and give your baby a few minutes in an upright position to burp.
💨Ensure your baby has a good deep latch at the breast or on the bottle teat. Babies use their tongues to stop the flow of milk if it's too quick. If they are not latched properly they cannot do this and end up gulping a lot more than just milk down.
💨 Sit baby up and have the bottle more horizontal so baby has more control over the flow. If breastfeeding; hold the baby more upright and lay back or down to slow the flow of breast milk.
💨 Tummy time a few times a day on a firm surface can help your baby's digestive system and move any wind through before it can build up and cause too many complaints
💨 Empty one breast at each feed- should feel soft after a feed. This maximizes the transfer of hindmilk and prevents a foremilk imbalance.
💨 Pace feed with a slow flow teat if bottle feeding, it helps prevent your baby from gulping too much A bottle feed should take 15-30 mins.
There are also many over-the-counter supplements that can be used to help with wind. Anything with relaxing qualities is beneficial but check with your health care provider or pharmacist before using
🤱If you'd like to book a session to learn any of these techniques or to be able to understand why your baby is crying and how you can help, book a Baby Whisperer Session via the Booking link in my Bio or visit my website.

💦Let's talk about Antenatal expressing 💦Did 💦Let's talk about Antenatal expressing
💦Did you do any expressing at the end of pregnancy? what are some things you used the colostrum for?
Antenatal expressing is when we HAND EXPRESS colostrum from the 36th week of pregnancy and collect and store it.
Colostrum is that sticky stuff that women can leak from the nipple as early as 20 weeks pregnant- it's ok if you haven't tho!
Colostrum is high in calories, builds your baby's immune system, protects your baby's gut reducing the risk of food sensitivities and allergies. It's full of fats, minerals and vitamins to stop your baby from getting dehydrated, and is a great natural laxative to help baby do lots of poops.
Why do we want to express and store it? Having a stash of colostrum in the freezer can be used to supplement the baby’s feeds after birth, can be used to soothe sore or damaged nipples, increases a mummies' confidence with breastfeeding, and reduce the need for formula in the early days of baby’s life.
🎬Watch my video on how to hand express via YouTube https://youtu.be/atCFo0RYKic few key points to remember are;
💧hot shower or hot facecloth over the breast first
💧sit somewhere quiet and comfortable
💧soft hands- use the finger and thumb pads in a 'C' shape
💧place your thumb at 12 o'clock and index finger at 6 o'clock on each side of the areolar
💧push the breast back to the rib cage
💧use a rhythmic squeeze of the thumb and index finger working around the areolar
💧remember the nipple delivers the colostrum but the breast makes it- keep the pressure on the breast, not at the nipple
💧it shouldn't hurt or cause any bruising
Remember it's a whole new skill to learn and sometimes this takes time.
If you'd like more information on expressing or breastfeeding towards the end of pregnancy- book a 'planning to breastfeed' session to learn some skills and tips on what to expect in the early days, and how to support your baby to breastfeed.
A big thankyou to my mum @heathazz for knitting up my demo breast ❤
